la_porte Prog ? Instrumental ?! Oh noes !
Well aktchually, you'd really be a fool to pass what is the best and most exciting prog I've heard in YEARS. Fantastic compositions, unusual and exciting motifs, excellent build-ups and tension, great synth, this is gold. And not many seem to be even aware of this deposit.

Lethe 22:01
No, no, go not to Lethe, neither twist Wolf's-bane, tight-rooted, for its poisonous wine; Nor suffer thy pale forehead to be kiss'd By nightshade, ruby grape of Proserpine; Make not your rosary of yew-berries, Nor let the beetle, nor the death-moth be Your mournful Psyche, nor the downy owl A partner in your sorrow's mysteries; For shade to shade will come too drowsily, And drown the wakeful anguish of the soul. But when the melancholy fit shall fall Sudden from heaven like a weeping cloud, That fosters the droop-headed flowers all, And hides the green hill in an April shroud; Then glut thy sorrow on a morning rose, Or on the rainbow of the salt sand-wave, Or on the wealth of globed peonies; Or if thy mistress some rich anger shows, Emprison her soft hand, and let her rave, And feed deep, deep upon her peerless eyes. She dwells with Beauty—Beauty that must die; And Joy, whose hand is ever at his lips Bidding adieu; and aching Pleasure nigh, Turning to poison while the bee-mouth sips: Ay, in the very temple of Delight Veil'd Melancholy has her sovran shrine, Though seen of none save him whose strenuous tongue Can burst Joy's grape against his palate fine; His soul shalt taste the sadness of her might, And be among her cloudy trophies hung.

about

"... the new and reborn Aton Five are a huge improvement over their past selves. If you like progressive hard rock music with enough muscle but just as much technical finesse, and you don’t mind the lack of vocals (I certainly don’t!), then you should definitely check out this fifty-minute-long album full of (mostly) long and always convincing instrumental progressive rock songs. Welcome back, Aton Five! Now that your childhood is over, I wish you a happy adolescent and adult life full of further such good albums."
— Pascal Thiel, DisAgreement, 9/10 ( disagreement.net/reviews2023/atonfive_atonfive.html )

"Constant flashes, elusive sound images, describe a multiplicity of emotions, that are really difficult to explain. They are capable, whimsical instrumentalists, with an enviable technique and a rare ability to always put everything at the service of the piece without ever overdoing it. Everything is in its place <...> The flow of the album is precise, done with excellent execution that presents psychedelia, sometimes the sound drowned in melancholy that turns into a pure frantic phase. All these feelings in each composition come to a climax and this is where the real quality of this album lies, never boring, tension builds throughout its duration and the instrumental rhapsody itself, led by keyboards and guitar gives a rather complex story and <...> many layers that merge into one fantastic whole."
— New Dawn of Prog ( www.instagram.com/p/CuEx572MRrQ/ )

"... the work they’ve put into the material is obvious and no less multifaceted than are the songs, “Alienation” resolving in a combination of sweeps and sprints, each of which resonates with purpose. <...> each of the three parts that make up “Lethe” should signal the depth of consideration in the entirety of the release. I know there was a plague on, but maybe Aton Five benefitted as well from having the time to focus as they so plainly did. Whether you try to keep up with the turns or sit back and let the band go where they will, Aton Five, the album, feels like the kind of record that might’ve ended up somewhere other than where the band first thought it would, but is stronger for having made the journey to the finished product."
— JJ Koczan, The Obelisk ( theobelisk.net/obelisk/2023/07/18/quarterly-review-2-2/ )

"... All tracks have sections that drag or push you from soaring guitar lines to storming riffs, and always that interplay between melodic instrumentation tickling the brain with bits of unexpected information that makes prog interesting. Groovy hard rock, alternating guitar and keyboard melodies on a very tight rhythm layer. They know how to build a song, take you on a journey."
— Jerry van Kooten, Dutch Progressive Rock Page, 9/10 ( www.dprp.net/reviews/2023/047 )

In the times of working on 'Solarstalgia' a peculiar bass riff was born during a break. We added a counterpoint guitar theme to it and thought that it would make a great interlude track on the album. However, the “interlude” spiraled out of our control and started to rapidly turn into a large suite called "Lethe", which became a cornerstone and the lengthiest track of our second album. It was "Lethe" which set the tone and direction of our new music, prioritizing scope of composition and exploration of classical musical form.

Making the album was difficult. Most of the ideas were discarded as unworthy or disharmonious to other ideas, excruciating perfectionism made us return to arrangements that were already recorded. Line-up was changing due to various circumstances and the band was on the verge of breaking up multiple times.

Working against such internal and external difficulties emphasized the Romantic mood of the album, which also resonated with a John Keats poem called “Ode on Melancholy”. A reading of it can be heard during the already mentioned "Lethe". In fact, the LP could be called just that — 'Ode on Melancholy'. But we decided that the most important thing about this release is our band acquiring its genuine identity. Therefore, it is simply called 'Aton Five'
